In an exciting regular-season opening game, the Falcons scored with 3:44 to go to capture a 2-1 victory over the Panthers. The 2008-09 NEHL regular season kicked off for the ‘98s at Conway Arena against the high-flying Springfield Falcons.
After a scoreless first period that saw numerous chances by both clubs, the Falcons got on the board first midway through the second period after a defensive breakdown lead to a shot over Adin Farhat's out-stretched glove.
Not to be denied, the ‘98s applied relentless pressure and eventually tied the game 1-1. Mike Barrett came through for the Panthers as he received a nice feed from Kyle Feeney and hit nothing but twine.
The remainder of the game saw up and down action with both clubs showing off their highly skilled players and speed. The forward lines of Feeney, Barrett and recently added James Wilson along with Joey Paige, Justin Pearson and Joshuah Chapman made play after play but could not get the puck by the talented Falcon goaltender.
The defensive corps of Nick Resca, Colby Austin, Paul Edson, Joey Goudey and Cam Hult provided great defensive zone coverage that limited the Falcons to only a handful of quality shots on Farhat.
However, with 3:44 left in regulation, a Springfield winger made a pretty pass across the crease that was tipped in by a teammate for a 2-1 lead.
Although down by 1, the Panthers had a couple of great chances late prior to pulling Farhat but the Falcon goaltender kept the biscuit out of the net.
Although it was a strong showing, the Panthers learned some valuable lessons that will no doubt make them a better team.
Coach Descoteaux commented after the game, "All of our systems were very well played up and down the ice. They didn't try to do the plays as drawn in practice, they changed little things to adapt to each new situation. We have been telling them this for two weeks now, and apparently they were listening."
The Panthers open up the Granite State League Regular Season on Saturday with a game against one of the newest additions to the Mass Select League and always formidable, Manchester Flames.
